William Engel

WILLIAM ENGEL is a New York, and san Diego-based painter specializing in commissioned works for both corporate and residential interiors.

His luminous landscapes are evocative and dramatic. Light, color, and texture play against stunning abstracted images of sky, water and land. Engel has developed his unique approach to landscape painting over the past twenty years using multiple layers of oil paint and thinners. Engel may mix and pour up to thirty colors onto a flat canvas before he begins to create his own singular view of water and land against a vibrant horizon.

By manipulating the canvas, Engel controls the blending and density of pigments. When the canvas is dry, he repeats this process, introducing new tones to the piece. Often, he applies as many as eight layers of colors over time. He then begins his editing process, often with the use of a fine brush.

Engel's work has been featured in shows at the New York School of Interior Design, where he is a instructor, at Skoto Gallery in NYC, and at Timmons Galleries in Rancho Sante Fe, among others. He has been commissioned to create work for the homes of singer-actress Whitney Houston and the lobby reception area of The Fireman's Fund on Wall Street, as well as the reception for the corporate headquarters of Time Warner at Columbus Circle in NYC. His most recent commission was installed at the offices of Diamond McCarthy where he painted four distinct canvases entitled “The Elements – Air, Water, Fire, and Earth.”

William is working on an additional new series of modern hard-edged pours of color on canvas and wood. He is using this technique on 3D sculptural forms as well. Given his experience as a senior instructor of Residential Design at the 3rd level at NYSID, he welcomes clients who are interested in commissioned pieces that are site specific and palettes that enhance the given interior.

He has collaborated with the Interior Design firms of Celia Berliner Design, Sue Ventura Design, and Charles Pavarini III Design. He has several commissioned works of art placed through Danette Koke Fine Art in Greenwich Village. Through Danette, he completed a large oil for the

lobby/reception area of the corporate headquarters of Time Warner at Columbus Circle in New York. His studios are located in the Flatiron District of New York and the Hillcrest area of San Diego. Engel's love of color and his passion for creating work that is as bold as the elements it reflects has gained him fans on both coasts.
